Wisdon Tooth Extractions
If your wisdom teeth are in your mouth, you should be aware that extraction might be necessary. Rely on John E. Sullivan DDS to perform wisdom tooth extraction and you’ll find the elimination of such impacted teeth isn’t nearly as painful as you might have initially assumed. Our dentist will analyze your unique wisdom teeth to gauge whether they are impacted and also determine if surgery is necessary to remove them. Wisdom teeth sometimes lack sufficient space to emerge properly in the late teens and early 20s. If your wisdom teeth become impacted, they will cause problems down the line unless you proactively address them with the assistance of our Carol Stream dentist.
Wisdom tooth impaction can occur in soft tissue when the uppermost part of the tooth extends above the bone and merely concealed by gum tissue. Hard tissue compaction can also occur in which the tooth fails to extend away from the bone. There is also the potential for wisdom teeth to emerge at odd angles including horizontal, distal or mesial, meaning an angling toward other teeth within the mouth.
Our dentist takes x-rays to view the position of wisdom teeth and develop a plan for extraction. Patients are provided with anesthesia to mitigate pain during extraction. The dentist then removes the tooth through an incision within the gum tissue. If necessary, the dentist will divide the tooth into smaller pieces to facilitate its removal from the socket. The wound is then sowed shut, preventing bacteria, blood and other particles from moving down into the space below.
