Dental Cleanings in Carol Stream, IL

Routine dental cleanings are one of the most important parts of maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Even with excellent brushing and flossing at home, plaque can accumulate in areas that are difficult to reach. Over time, plaque can mineralize into calculus, commonly called tartar, which cannot be removed effectively with a toothbrush alone.

At John E. Sullivan DDS, P.C., dental cleanings are performed with an emphasis on both disease prevention and early detection.

During a routine cleaning, our team removes plaque, calculus, and surface staining from the teeth. Particular attention is given to the gumline and areas between the teeth, where periodontal disease commonly begins.

We also evaluate the health of the gums and surrounding tissues. Periodontal measurements may be taken to assess the depth of the spaces between the teeth and gums and to identify signs of inflammation, attachment loss, or bone loss.

When appropriate, the teeth are polished to remove remaining surface deposits and leave the teeth feeling smooth and clean.

Regular preventive visits also allow us to identify changes that patients may not yet notice themselves. Cavities, fractured teeth, periodontal disease, abnormal wear, and other conditions are often easier to manage when identified early.

The appropriate cleaning schedule varies from patient to patient. Many patients benefit from visits approximately every six months, while patients with periodontal disease or other risk factors may require more frequent care.

Our goal is not simply to “clean your teeth.” We want to help maintain the health of the teeth, gums, supporting bone, and oral tissues for the long term.
