Clear Aligner Orthodontic Treatment

Clear aligners use a series of removable, digitally planned appliances to gradually move teeth into improved positions.

They can provide an alternative to traditional braces for appropriately selected orthodontic problems.

At John E. Sullivan DDS, P.C., clear aligner treatment begins with evaluation of the teeth, gums, bite, and overall oral health.

Digital scans or impressions are obtained and used to develop a computerized orthodontic treatment plan.

Each aligner applies controlled forces to selected teeth.

Patients progress through a sequence of aligners as the teeth gradually move.

Treatment may be used for selected cases involving:

  • Crowding
  • Spacing
  • Rotated teeth
  • Certain bite problems
  • Orthodontic relapse

Small tooth-colored attachments may be bonded to certain teeth to help the aligners generate the necessary movement.

Some cases may also require a small amount of enamel reduction between teeth to create space.

Patient compliance is critical. Aligners generally need to be worn for the majority of each day and removed primarily for eating, drinking certain beverages, and oral hygiene.

After active treatment is completed, retention is essential because teeth have a natural tendency to move over time.

Clear aligners can be highly effective, but they are not appropriate for every orthodontic problem. We evaluate each patient’s case individually before recommending treatment.
