A comprehensive dental examination involves considerably more than simply checking for cavities.
At John E. Sullivan DDS, P.C., we perform a detailed evaluation of the teeth, gums, bite, jaw joints, oral tissues, and surrounding head and neck structures to develop a complete understanding of a patient’s oral health.
The examination begins outside the mouth. We evaluate areas of the head and neck for abnormalities, including the jaw, facial structures, lymph node regions, and temporomandibular joints.
The TMJs may be evaluated for tenderness, restricted movement, deviation, clicking, popping, or other signs of dysfunction.
Inside the mouth, we examine the:
These tissues are evaluated for anything outside the range of normal anatomy, including unusual lesions, discoloration, ulcerations, swelling, or tissue changes that may require additional evaluation.
Each tooth is examined for conditions such as decay, cracks, fractures, defective restorations, excessive wear, erosion, mobility, and other structural problems.
Existing fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, and other restorations are also evaluated.
The gums and supporting structures of the teeth are evaluated for inflammation and periodontal disease. When indicated, periodontal probing measurements are recorded and compared with radiographic findings.
We also evaluate the way the teeth come together and look for abnormal wear patterns, grinding, clenching, or other signs of excessive forces.
Combined with appropriate dental imaging and a patient’s medical and dental history, the examination allows us to develop an individualized treatment plan rather than treating individual teeth in isolation.
Our philosophy is to identify problems early, explain what we find clearly, and recommend treatment that is thoughtful, conservative, and appropriate for the individual patient.
