What Is Considered a Dental Emergency?

Some dental problems should be evaluated quickly to prevent the condition from becoming more serious. Contact our office if you are experiencing:

  • Severe or persistent toothache
  • Facial or gum swelling
  • Dental abscess or suspected infection
  • Broken, cracked, or chipped tooth
  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Lost or broken crown
  • Significant pain when biting or chewing
  • Dental trauma or injury
  • Swelling or pain around a wisdom tooth
  • Broken or damaged dental restoration
  • Other sudden or severe dental pain

Emergency Toothache Treatment

A toothache can have many causes, including tooth decay, a cracked tooth, infection, inflammation of the dental pulp, or problems involving the gums and supporting tissues.

During an emergency examination, we evaluate the tooth and surrounding structures to determine the source of the problem. Dental X-rays may be taken when necessary. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include a filling, crown, root canal therapy, tooth extraction, or other appropriate dental care.

Our goal is not simply to mask the pain, but to identify and treat its underlying cause whenever possible.

Dental Infections and Abscesses

Dental infections can cause significant tooth pain, swelling, tenderness, or a bad taste in the mouth. Some infections may also cause facial swelling or systemic symptoms.

Treatment depends on the source and severity of the infection and may involve root canal therapy, drainage, extraction, or other dental treatment. Antibiotics may be prescribed when clinically appropriate, but definitive treatment of the source of a dental infection is often still necessary.

Significant facial or neck swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or other potentially life-threatening symptoms require immediate emergency medical attention.

Broken or Chipped Teeth

A broken tooth does not always mean the tooth needs to be removed. Depending on the extent of the damage, we may be able to restore the tooth using composite bonding, a dental crown, root canal therapy, or another restorative treatment.

Prompt evaluation is particularly important when a fracture causes significant pain or exposes the deeper structures of the tooth.

Knocked-Out Teeth

A knocked-out permanent tooth is a time-sensitive dental emergency. Contact our office immediately for instructions and evaluation.

Handle the tooth by the crown rather than the root. If it cannot be placed back into the socket safely, keeping it moist while obtaining urgent dental care can help preserve the possibility of successful treatment.

Same-Day Emergency Dental Appointments

When possible, we make room in our schedule for patients experiencing urgent dental problems. Availability will depend on the circumstances and our schedule that day, so calling the office is the fastest way to reach us regarding an emergency.
