Toothache

A toothache is a symptom rather than a diagnosis.

Dental pain can originate from several different structures, and identifying the cause is essential before treatment is performed.

Possible causes include:

  • Tooth decay
  • Inflamed dental pulp
  • Dental infection
  • Cracked teeth
  • Gum disease
  • Bite trauma
  • Sinus-related pain
  • Jaw muscle pain
  • Food trapped between teeth

At John E. Sullivan DDS, P.C., an emergency examination typically includes a discussion of the patient’s symptoms, clinical testing, and appropriate dental imaging.

We may evaluate how the tooth responds to pressure, biting, temperature, or percussion and examine the surrounding gums and tissues.

Once the source of the pain is identified, we can discuss appropriate treatment.

Treatment may range from a simple restoration to root canal therapy, extraction, periodontal treatment, bite adjustment, or another form of care depending upon the diagnosis.

Our priority during a dental emergency is not simply to mask pain. We want to identify why the tooth hurts and treat the underlying problem.
